Abstract
It’s more than a two centuries when Industrial development, economic growth, technological development, and societal transformation are important aspects of a nation’s growth. The transformation journey from the First Industrial Revolution to the emergence of intelligent, human-centric ecofriendly systems in Industry 5.0, industries have progressed to improve production, quality, efficiency, and sustainability. This review presents a comprehensive study of industry revolutions by analysing the transition from traditional and conventional manufacturing practices to smart and intelligent systems that shows how modern industrial ecosystems has overgrown through the centuries. The study explains the historical progression through the five industrial revolutions, from Industry 1.0 to Industry 5.0, focussing on the technological growth, production models, and socio-economic influences related with each phase. More stress is placed on enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cyber-physical systems (CPS), cloud computing, big data analytics, digital twins, robotics, additive manufacturing, blockchain, and advanced communication networks, which jointly supports Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0. Recent developments indicate that Industry 5.0 goes beyond automation by accenting human-centricity, sustainability, collaborative and flexibility between human world and intelligent machines. This review also investigates the challenges associated with digital transformation, including cybersecurity, workforce skilling and training, interdependency, ethical concerns, and environmental and societal sustainability. The paper guides researchers, educators, policymakers, and industrial practitioners with a holistic understanding of industrial evolution and its responsibility in shaping the factories and enterprises of the future.
